Spam and an undesirable possible consequence.

Gents,

A few weeks ago the most unfortunate happened when a member tried logging in and found a message saying "Banned".

He wasn't, and no bona fide member ever will be, what happened is I had banned one of the spammers from the site and the IP address partially matched a members..

It was resolved in a few minutes...

However to try and tidy the process up, I removed any restrictions on IP addresses.

In the past 3 days we have had in excess of 15 "New Members" joining and trying to ruin the forums with adverts for Viagra through to Holiday homes.

To keep the site tidy, I remove these people as often as I can (Daily), and through a process of watching for similar IP addresses place a ban on that range...

For instance... 4 "New members" were removed a few minutes ago, 2 showing 180.149.230.58 and another 2 showing 180.149.185.324
Rather than fill up pages of restrictions, its easier for me to monitor and act to just ban the range 180.149

There is a VERY RARE chance that whilst I am doing this it may affect a Bona Fide member if their IP address should match..

If this should happen, (It is unlikely) but "IF" it should, then please accept my apologies in advance and a quick email to me and I will rectify immediately... (I would need your username only).

If any computer savvy person out there is aware of a way to stop the constant attacks, then I would be grateful for any assistance.

As an average we get 3 to 4 "new members" (Spammers) per day. Today has been particularly busy for them as we have had 8 already.

None of their posts will make it through to forums anymore, as they need to request permission to post, but it clogs up the membership list and messages will appear in New Alerts.

Many Thanks.

Cheers

Dave
